Graduated Licensing Process

Texas is one of the many states that are now requiring a graduated licensing process in order to ensure the safety and success of beginning drivers.  Below are the steps that need to be completed in order to obtain an unrestricted drivers license:

Step 1:  Driving with a Permit

This phase lasts for a minimum of 6 months and requires a licensed driver 21 years or older to accompany the student at all times.

During this time students should continue to practice basic driving skills in order to gain more experience.

Students must log a minimum of 30 additional hours, 10 of which must be driven at night.

Students must be at least 16 years old and have held their permit for 6 months before they can be eligible to obtain their driver’s license.

  1.    At the end of phase one, students will need to schedule a behind-the-wheel exam with the local DPS office.
